How to create a WhatsApp link in 3 steps
- Pick your country code and type your number. Use the number that is registered on WhatsApp, without a leading zero.
- Add a pre-filled message. A first line like "Hi, I'd like a quote for" saves the customer typing and tells you which page they came from.
- Copy the link or download the QR code. Paste the link into your bio, ads, email signature or website button, and print the QR code on anything physical.

redirects to the same chat. wa.me is shorter, so it is

Instagram bio and stories
Paste the link into the website field of your Instagram profile, or attach it to a story with the link sticker. Business profiles can also add a WhatsApp action button that uses the same number.

page. Keep target="_blank" so the chat opens without losing

Google Business Profile and email signature
Add the link as the appointment or website URL on your Google Business Profile, and as a plain hyperlink in your email signature. Both accept an ordinary https URL.
Printed material and packaging
Download the QR code as SVG so it stays sharp at any size, then put it on menus, receipts, shop windows, flyers and delivery boxes. Print it at 2 cm or larger and keep the white margin around it.
Paid ads and UTM tracking
wa.me links do not carry UTM parameters into WhatsApp, so identify the source inside the pre-filled message instead. One link per campaign with a distinct opening line tells you where every conversation came from.
Tips for links that actually get clicked
- Keep the pre-filled message short. Long text gets cut off on small screens and people delete it rather than scroll.
- Write the message from the customer's point of view, not yours. It appears in their input box, so "I'd like to book a table" works, "Thanks for contacting us" does not.
- Use a different opening line per channel so you can tell an Instagram lead from a flyer lead at a glance.
- Say where the link goes. "Message us on WhatsApp" converts better than a bare "Contact us".
- Answer fast. The main reason people pick WhatsApp over a contact form is that they expect a reply in minutes.

What happens when someone clicks my WhatsApp link?
WhatsApp opens a chat with your number, with the pre-filled message already in the input box. On a phone that is the WhatsApp app, on a desktop it is WhatsApp Web or the desktop app. The customer still has to press send, and they do not need to save your number as a contact.
Do I need WhatsApp Business to use a wa.me link?
No. Click to chat links work with any WhatsApp number, personal or business. WhatsApp Business adds a catalogue, away messages and labels, and the WhatsApp Business Platform adds automation, but the link itself is the same.
Why does my WhatsApp link say the number is invalid?
Almost always a formatting problem. Use the full international number with the country code, digits only, and drop the leading zero from the local number: a UK number written 07700 900123 becomes 447700900123. Also check the number is actually registered on WhatsApp.
Do Mexican and Brazilian numbers need a special format?
They can. Mexican numbers are sometimes reachable as +52 1 followed by the 10 digit number, and older Brazilian mobiles may work with or without the extra 9 after the area code. If one form fails, test the other with the "Test it" button before you publish the link.
Can I put emoji or line breaks in the message?
Emoji work fine and are encoded automatically. Line breaks are unreliable across devices, so keep the pre-filled message to a single sentence.
How long does a WhatsApp link stay valid?
Forever, as long as the number stays registered on WhatsApp. There is nothing to renew and no expiry date. If you change numbers, generate a new link and update wherever you published the old one.
Can I track where my WhatsApp leads come from?
Not with UTM parameters, because they are dropped when WhatsApp opens. Give each placement its own pre-filled message instead, or use a click tracker as the public link that redirects to your wa.me URL so your analytics still records the click.
Does a WhatsApp link work in every country?
It works anywhere WhatsApp itself works. In the handful of countries where WhatsApp is blocked or restricted, the link opens but the chat will not connect without a working WhatsApp installation.
Why would I need a QR code as well as a link?
A link is for screens, a QR code is for everything else. Nobody types a URL from a shop window, a menu or a delivery box, but they will point a camera at it. Both open the same chat.
Can I generate a link for a group chat?
Not with this tool. Group invite links are created inside WhatsApp under group settings, and they use a chat.whatsapp.com address rather than wa.me.
